The arabesque-adorned Garden
I was lost in a harsh desert,
you came quenching my thirst with a kiss,
but the burning waft of your lip
flung my heart into a caldera,
to melt in the fiery lava.
It was like the glazier's blow
shaping a rare cup
of molten glass in my chest.
You opened wide the gates
of a sensual garden
made of palms, roses, pomegranates,
cedar, myrtle and jasmine,
where for an eternity,
alas too ephemeral,
I was inebriated by the sweet waters
of a fountain adorned
with the mosaics and the precious marbles
of every lunar nostalgia.
But the guardian angel interposed
the cold blade of his sword
denying me the sweetness of dates,
grapes and apples, so that the coolness
and the scents of that Eden became
a hell of deprivation,
and every whisper of delight
became a gasp of agony.
Mortified I questioned a dervish
who was begging, dancing at the Bazaar,
he replied with a smile:
"Oh majnoon1,
don't you know that souls plot to
meet long before their bodies
even slightly touch each other
for the first time?"
"Why, then, o Sidi2 the Benevolent
has once again moked me
setting this old heart on fire,
if He lets it chill again now
as a firebrand hurled into a cold puddle?
To what end did He plant this rare seed,
which oblivious slowly suffocates me
with roots that are impossible to eradicate?"
The holy man laughed, pointing at the countless stones
of a bleak desert, "Oh mahboul3, don't you know that these are the hearts of the multitudes
that preceded you?
The Generous in His infinite mercy
tries to grant each a drop
of the blessed waters from His source
but men in their follys
pit contemptuously their only cure
just like they were savouring coarse wine,
so that their hearts dry up
and harden, like the shell of a nut
fallen from the cursed tree
on the burning sands of oblivion.
With foolish arrogance they walk away
certain they will soon come across fine fountains
spilling rose syrup, wine and cinnamon,
and as a reckless camel
refusing to drink from the goatskin
handed by the humble fellah4,
they get lost in sand labyrinths,
soon tormented by scorching thirst
and tortured by unrelenting darts.
You speak of love just like a vain
skirmish between frivolous lovers
don't you know that you are mentioning the wine
that the Beloved drips
straight from His lips into the vile cups
of our imperfect hearts,
making them valuable as flasks
made of Aleppo blown glass?
It is the bread that the archangels
purloin at their table,
handing to men in their dream
to let them share heavenly delights.
It is the mirror in which the Incomparable
bestows His reflected light so that
the eye can perceive His halo
without being annihilated.
It is the compass that marks
the way back along the lost routes
'til the oasis in the divine embrace.
It is an echo of a melody stolen
from the score of the eternal Musician
that Uris play among the heavenly flowerbeds,
making every nostalgia vibrate
like Oud5 and Rabab5 strings,
inside the chest of those who are awake.
It is the heart of the purest and most generous
angel who opened his chest
as an pomegranate
oozing his sweetest bloodt
o assuage the bitter thirst of the desert.
The ignorant swears that is made
of flames the hell's gloomy furnace,
but I do declare that hell is the ice
of loneliness that clutches the hearts
and can be melted only by a searing flame
just for a fleeting moment.
Do not curse, then, the fiery dart
that pierced burning your chest,
or the cruel quill tip
which inscribed a precious
calligraphy on your heart walls.
These bitter tears were bestowed upon you
just as luxurious jewels,
they were engraved in your flesh
so that you could not obliterate them.
The blade rips the oyster
to remove the snowy pearl,
which required so much labour.
Only fools in their delirium
crave the precious liquor
they have despise
dand dash into a fetid and contaminated pit,
without even remembering
the nectar that they failed to recognize."

Il Giardino rabescato
Perduto in un aspro deserto,
mi dissetasti con un bacio,
ma l’alito bruciante del tuo labbro
gettò il mio cuore in una caldera,
a sciogliersi fra lave infuocate.
Fu come soffio di vetraio
e modellò una rara coppa
di vetro fuso nel mio petto.
Mi spalancasti i cancelli
d'un sensuale giardino
di rose, palme, melograni, cedro, mirto e gelsomino,
dove per un’eternità,
ahimé troppo effimera,
mi inebriai alle dolci acque
d'una fontana rabescata con i mosaici e i marmi rari
di tutte le nostalgie lunari.
Ma l’angelo guardiano interpose
la fredda lama della sua spada,
negandomi le dolcezze di datteri,
grappoli e pomi, cosí che la frescura
e i profumi di quell’Eden divennero
un inferno di deprivazione,
e si mutò ogni sospiro di diletto
in rantolo d’agonia e afflizione.
Mortificato interrogai un derviscio
che mendicava danzando al Bazar,
sorridendo rispose: “O majnun1 ascolta,
non sai che le anime tramano per
incontrarsi molto tempo avanti
come assaporassero vino triviale,
cosicché si disseccano e s'induriscono
i loro cuori, come scorza di noce
caduta dall’albero maledetto
sulle sabbie ardenti dell’oblio.
e, come uno sconsiderato cammello
possa l’occhio intuirne l’alone mirabile
senza esserne annientato.
È la bussola che segna il cammino
del ritorno fra le rotte perdute
all’oasi dell’abbraccio divino.
Come lussuosi monili
ti furono elargite queste lacrime amare,
